The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins I was first introduced to the Hunger Games by watching the movie, and after listening to all of the hype surrounding it, I was disappointed with it. I figured I would give the novel a try, and was pleasantly surprised at how much better it was than the movie. First off, Suzanne Collins is a very talented writer. She has a mastery of prose that, as a fellow writer, I can appreciate. Many of the things that really aggravated me about the movie were things that they changed from the novel that made the sequence of events and the story logic make no sense. They should have just let things stay as they were when they made the movie adaptation because the novel is far more logical and has a much better flow to it. I like the first person perspective, which focused the story to everything that Katniss experiences. From a technical standpoint, I didn't like the present tense that was used in the story. I thought using a more traditional past tense would have worked better. Otherwise, this was a strong novel, and I look forward to reading the remaining entries in the series.
